안타깝게도 내 집사람(68세)은 지난 25년 동안 혈액 투석치료를 받아오고 있습니다. 기간 중 지병으로 인한 이런저런 합병증의 어려움을 비교적 잘 견뎌내 왔습니다. 그러던 중 지난 5월 14일 갑자기 상황이 악화(혈압강하)되어 평소 치료받고 있는 경희대학병원 응급실로 입원하였습니다. 급히 혈관 조영 술로 확인결과 7년 전에 관상동맥에 삽입한 스텐트( 2개) 부분이 완전히 막혔다는 진단을 받았습니다. 담당 의사가 말하기를 더 이상의 스텐트 시술은 불가하고 오로지 관상동맥 우회수술밖에 해결책이 없다고 하면서 국내에서 가장 수술 경험이 많은 신촌 세브란스병원으로의 이원을 제언하였습니다.
보호자로서 선택의 여지가 없어 곧바로 5월 16일 세브란스 병원으로 이송 입원하게 되었습니다. 수많은 검사 끝이 5월 21일 오전9시 드디어 수술이 시작되었습니다. 3시간여의 수술 후 중환자실로 옮겨 총 입원일수 16일 동안 10일간을 집중 치료를 받은 후 드디어 5월31일 오후 퇴원하였습니다.
담당 의사가 수술전날 환자 본인과 보호자에게 수술에 대하여 전반적인 설명을 하면서 이런저런 서면 동의서에 서명을 받았으며 특히 집사람의 경우는 워낙 오랜 기간 동안 투석을 받아온 환자라 최악의 경우의 확률이 비교적 높다고 힌트를 주는 바람에 환자 보인은 물론 보호자인 내 자신 무척근심을 하지 않을 수 없었습니다. 그러나 모든 염려는 기우로 돌려졌고 집사람은 무사히 퇴원하게 되었습니다. 타의 추종을 불허하는 대한민국 의술에 크게 감명 받았으며 집사람을 성공적으로 퇴원할 수 있게 해준 의료진에게 큰절을 올렸습니다. 입원 기간 중 엄마를 위하여 헌신적인 간호를 담당해준 아들딸들 그리고 쾌유를 빌어주신 수많은 주변분 들에게 큰 감사를 드립니다. 사랑하는 집사람이 오래도록 우리 가족 옆에 있어주길 간절히 기원합니다. 감사합니다.

Unfortunately my wife has been on the hemo-dialysis treatment for the last 25 years. During the period, the chronic illness caused a lot of difficulties due to complications. However, she has coped well with them.
In the meantime, on May 14, 2019, she had to be urgently admitted to the Kyunghee University Hospital where she has been treated for a quarter century. Through the angiogram, she was found that a coronary artery in which two stents were inserted seven years ago was completely blocked. The attending physician explained that no further stent insertion surgery will be possible , but the only solution will be the coronary artery bypass surgery. After finishing various examinations, heart surgery started at 09:00 Hours on May 21, 2019. She underwent surgery for approximately 3 hours and then moved to the Heart Intensive Care Unit (HICU) where she had to stay for 10 days out of total 16 days of hospital treatment. At last, she was thankfully discharged from the hospital on May 31, 2019.
Hours before the surgery starts, an operating surgeon interviewed my wife and me and explained about the surgery procedure. At the same time we were required to sign on written consents documents. The doctor also emphasized that my wife’s case the surgery risk would be relatively higher than that of other patients due to her excessively long hemo-dialysis treatment. Because of the doctor’s advice, both of us could not escape from serious anxieties.
However, all the anxieties have become baseless, and my spouse was finally approved by the doctor to leave the hospital. Realizing the peerless technology of the ROK’s medical treatment again, I made a deep bow to the doctors and nurses who provided my wife with a miraculous opportunity. On the occasion of the successful surgery, I would like to express my sincere thanks to my kids who have wholeheartedly taken care of their mother and those who have sent a lot of prayers and wishes for the quickest recovery.
