The ROK MC - ANGLICO partnership

The partnership between the Korean Marine Corps and the U.S. Marines of ANGLICO (Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company) dates back 60 years.  Mr. Steve Selig is currently working on a book about the history of ANGLICO.  He just posted a note on our ANGLICO website, as follows:

"Hello all,

Just a quick note -

There are documents stating ANGLICO supported the ROK Marines (KMC) during the Inchon invasion of September 1950.

So I believe this is where the long-standing partnership between the two units was founded.

Happy 60th Anniversary this September!

SS"

Just as soon as I have more details, I will share them.  Steve has promised to send me a mountain of documents, just as soon as his book is published.

I'm appreciating you and all Angliko men very much your strong supports, and expecting those documents relating to Korean War Inchon invasion.

I just spoke with Mr. Selig for more than an hour about his ongoing research efforts regarding ANGLICO during the Korean War. The early history of the several ANGLICO units and groups is complicated. It seems that in 1950, at the Inchon invasion, the 1st Signal Btn/ANGLICO that had teams with each of the 1st Marine Division units, also had a team with the KMC Regiment that by then was attached to the 1st Marine Division for the invasion.

It is Steve's opinion that this was probably the first time that the KMC had an ANGLICO team attached that could call in close air support or naval gunfire. They were also at Wonson and Chosin (two different ANGLICO's were at Chosin). This ANGLICO group was not the same as the 1st ANGLICO FMF unit that formed in 1951, and which also provided teams to the KMC, in the later battles such as those in the area of the Punchbowl.

All these ANGLICO units and groups eventually became better organized, and today we have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th ANGLICO, who support U.S. and Allied units that require our specialized skills.

Author Steve Selig has sent me a book: ROK Marine Corps Short History, by Headquarters ROKMC. This is a bilingual book that outlines the ROK MC history from 1949 to 1956. There is not much detail, but dates and names of many operations are given. I am scanning this and hope that some of the old Korean War veterans can match up the dates and operations with their own records and memories.
