일주일전 원로 청룡전우 김재규님으로부터 제게 문자 메시지가 도착했습니다.

내용은 미 해병전우회 기념품 판매 사이트에서 미 해병대 모자를 하나 고른 후 해외구매절차를 밟는데 도저히 안 되니 좀 해결해달라는 얘기였습니다. 제가 바로 들어가 해보니 저 또한 끝낼 수가 없었습니다.

그래서 바로 오랜 친분을 유지하고 있는 미 해병전우 밴스 홀에게 전화를 걸어 도움을 요청했습니다. 언제나 우리 한국 전우들에게 호의를 베풀고 있는 미 해병친구가 한마디로 자기가 대신 구입해서 보낼 테니 염려 말라고 하는 것이었습니다. 서로 이런저런 기념품들을 주고받는 사이라 고맙다는 인사를 하고 기다리던 차에 바로 어제 그 미 해병대 모자가 도착했습니다.

비가 쏟아지려고 잔뜩 흐려있었지만 김 전우님하고 용산 용사의집에서 만나기로하고 우산도 챙기지 않고 부지런히 용산으로 향했습니다. 역에 내려 때마침 쏟아지는 비를 맞으며 용사의 집으로 뛰어가니 벌써부터 노병께서 입구에서서 기다리고 계셨습니다.

커피 샾에 앉자마자 모자를 전해드렸더니 80고령의 노 해병께서 어린아이처럼 좋아하셨습니다. 굳이 대금을 지불하시겠다고 우기셨지만 미국전우의 고마운 참뜻을 전해드리며 만류했습니다. 배보다 배꼽이 더 크다는 얘기가 실감났습니다. 왜냐하면 정작 모자 값은 고작 $13.46 이었지만 운송료 $35.99가 보태져 도합 $49.45 나 됐기 때문입니다.ㅎ.ㅎ.

과일안주에 두꺼비 한 병을 나눠 마시며 서로의 지난얘기들을 늘어놨습니다. 노병께서 죽는 그날까지 보물처럼 간직하시겠다고 하며 흐뭇해하시는 모습에서 애틋한 전우애를 읽을 수 있었습니다. 특히 김 전우님께서 평소 보여주시는 본인이 오래 동안 몸담았던 해병대에 대한 애착은 시쳇말로 둘째가라면 서운하실 정도임을 확인하고 있습니다. 그 옛날 전투현장에서 선사받은 난청현상 때문에 어려움을 겪고 계신 모습에서 애잔함도 함께 느낄 수 있었습니다. 부디 건강하시고 100세까지 장수하시길 바랍니다. 필승!

A Bona Fide Token of Camaraderie

A week ago, on April 10, 2016, I received a message through the mobile phone from a ROKMC veteran, a retired gunny sergeant, Mr. Kim Jae-kyu. The old sergeant served in the Vietnam War under the 2nd Brigade of the ROKMC( Blue Dragon unit) in Mid 1960s.

In the message he said that he browsed the US Marine Shop and chose a USMC baseball cap to purchase. However, he explained, even though he tried to place an order more than ten times, he still couldn't get through. So he asked me a favor to let him know how to finish the purchasing procedure.

For some reason the system didn't allow me to go through either. I had no other alternative but gave a ring to my long-time friend, Mr. Vance Hall in the States (a US Marine Corps Nam veteran) to ask a favor. As soon as he heard about the story, he replied" Jae, I will place the order for the ROKMC sergeant. He also added "it will be my pleasure to do so for my Korean friend.

Now, the cap was delivered today by the UPS. With no delay I informed the sergeant of its arrival, and I rushed to a restaurant to deliver the important gift that has reached Seoul over the Pacific. Handing over the gift to the sergeant, I did convey what Mr. Vance Hall had said. The old man was so touched by Mr. Vance's extraordinary kindness that he deeply appreciated him showing his tears. The ROKMC veteran didn't fail to add that he would cherish the bona fide token of camaraderie for the rest of his life. I am sure he will. I salute you two marines.
